SERVICE

SCONT's Service Committe and Advisors strive to plan and provide opportunities for SCONT youth to give back to their communities is various ways. As statesmen, we feel the best way to help our youth appreciate their country and many blessings is through their service to others.

Last Year's Recap:                Total Service Hours Completed- 1040.5 hrs.

SCONT youth really did light up the night as they helped run the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Light the NIght walk. The kids helped to set up stations, prepared, filled, and handed out hundreds of balloons, ran the Kids' Fun Zone, cheered for walkers, handed out water bottles as they crossed the finish line, and helped to clean up after the event was over. It was a fantastic  evening!

Light the Night

Christmas time can be a very lonely time for our senior citizens living in assisted living centers. SCONT chose to create Christmas crafts and handed them out to the residents of Sunrise Senior Center, along with providing them with holiday-spirit entertainment. It was a joyous sight to see all the youth singing their hearts out, and the seniors dancing and clapping for them.

Toys For Tots

Each year, SCONT teams up with Strengthening Families to run a distribution location for the United States Marine Corps Toys For Tots Program. The youth unpack, sort, and help needy families find the perfect presents for their children days before Christmas. Our members have really had the opportunity to feel the true meaning of Christmas through this project.

Oak Point Preserve Clean-Up

Many of the members of SCONT are nature lovers! For this reason, we usually have at least one park clean-up project a session. Since Oak Point Nature Preserve is so close to several of our youth, they feel it is a duty, and also a lot of fun, to help clean the nature trails and creek bed of any trash and debris. Mud is always an added bonus!

30-Hour Famine

There is no better way to fully understand the burden of starvation without actually experiencing it for yourself. This past February, SCONT youth fasted for 30 hours while fundraising and assisting the community in World Vision's 30-Hour Famine. SCONT youth raised an amazing $2200 to help our world's most hungry nations. It was an experience that will never be forgotten!

North Texas Food Bank

Even in our own North Texas communities, many people go without enough food to adequately nurish their bodies. The members of SCONT wanted to make in impact in their own area, so they chose to work for a morning at the North Texas Food Bank. They sorted out potatoes and oranges, and in the end provided enough food for 7,340 meals.

Sunset at Memorial Park

Our last service project for the 2012-2013 session was setting up, taking down, and handing out refreshments at Sunset at Memorial Park. The event commemorated fallen soldires, helped us remember those who serve our country in the armed forces, and gave Memorial Day more meaning. What a beautiful project to end our year!
